Julie Huso, Executive Director of VOR, a national organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD), will attend the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living’s ID/DD Day in Phoenix, Arizona on October 6, 2013.
VOR advocates for high quality care and human rights for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) across the country. The AHCA/NCAL conference includes education sessions, inspiring general sessions, and an interactive Expo Hall for long-term and post-acute care professionals for seniors and people will disabilities.

For the last several months, every Sacramento legislative hearing that involved the Department of Developmental Services was marked by the very strong call to “Close the Developmental Centers” (DCs). This call came from community activists, from lobbyists, from consumers, from service providers, and from some legislators. Outside of the committee hearings, rallies have been held calling for closure of the DCs. Several organizations representing community services are working to find a legislative sponsor to close the DCs.

Long-time VOR Legislative Committee Chairman, Peter Kinzler, announces his retirement; hands baton to David Hart
Peter Kinzler “retired” from his career two years ago, but never really retired.
David Kassel has launched “The Real Choices in Care Blog,” a project in conjunction with the VOR and the Massachusetts Coalition of Families and Advocates (COFAR, Inc.).
The blogsite reports on issues affecting people with developmental disabilities around the country.
“I hope to bring a critical perspective and investigative scrutiny to the ongoing closures of developmental centers and the privatization of services nationwide,” said Kassel. “I also hope to report on success stories regarding the preservation of the continuum of care.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 9, Terry Kopansky, Executive Director of Mur-Ci Homes, Inc., a care provider for people with developmental disabilities in Antioch, Tennessee, moderated a panel of experts who discuss proven strategies for delivering high quality care to this vulnerable population.
The panel discussion, featuring Ralph Kennedy of Tennessee Family Solutions (Nashville), Renee Naylor of Westcare Management (Oregon), and Brad Whitehead of Lanterman Developmental Center (California), was part of the national convention of VOR, a nonprofit advocacy organization.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – From June 8 - 12, nearly 70 volunteers representing 22 states attended the VOR Annual Conference and Initiative in Washington, D.C.
VOR is a national family/guardian organization advocating for high quality care and human rights for all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). Attendees were mostly families and some caregivers of people with profound intellectual disabilities.
