About VORVOR is an organization of families, friends and professionals speaking out for people with mental retardation that supports the right of individuals and families to choose the residential setting most appropriate to the needs of each individual. We advocate for a full range of quality choices including large public and private residential campuses, community based settings and home care. VOR is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization governed by a volunteer board of directors.
VOR membership includes several thousand family members, organizations, companies, facilities, professionals and educators from around the country. The year round focus includes advocacy for all residential choices, family participation in decision making, significant legal cases, special education choices and quality care for all.
About the conference - 2008 marks VOR's 25th Anniversary! From June 13 – 20, 2008, VOR will host an Annual Meeting and Washington Initiative, with many related events. Because 2008 marks VOR’s 25th Anniversary, additional festivities to mark this important milestone are being planned.
Following an Annual Board of Directors meeting, which is open to VOR’s membership, attendees are provided a forum in which they can deliver State Reports. The one day Annual Meeting marks the second day of VOR’s conference schedule and will include educational and networking opportunities. The program and speakers for the 2008 Annual Meeting are still being confirmed. That evening, members will be treated to a reception to celebrate VOR’s 25th Anniversary. The event will facilitate further networking and camaraderie among advocates with a common cause.
Following the Annual Meeting, participants will hone their grassroots advocacy skills by visiting every Congressional office to advocate for choice and quality care for people with mental retardation, including but not limited to seeking important reforms to the Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act. In 2008, VOR will be seeking passage of a “Family Rights Bill” introduced by Rep. Barney Frank on VOR’s behalf. VOR will provide each participant with credible “leave-behind” information each Senator and Representative. Other Washington Initiative events include a Legislative Briefing prior to Hill visits, 2 debriefings following Hill visits, and a Capitol Hill reception to further introduce VOR’s mission and members to Members of Congress and their staff.
To ensure maximum participation, VOR asks only for modest conference fees ($50 per member). The balance of the conference cost is covered by the generous support of sponsors and contributors who value our work.
Why you should be a sponsorThe attendees are effective leaders, advocates and influential members of local and state organizations who report back to these organization on the Annual Meeting and Washington Initiative. We expect more than 100 attendees at the Annual Meeting. Most participants will also stay for the Washington Initiative. Again this year, a VOR member will visit every Member of Congress.
This is your opportunity to have your name associated nationally with support to advocate for choice and quality care for people with mental retardation. Past sponsors have had success reaching these hard to locate individuals and organizations around the country.
Thank you for your consideration. Please help us be heard in Washington D.C. as we speak with every single Congressional office. This is a unique opportunity to visibly position your organization as a leader among organizations supporting people with mental retardation.
